Results and Awards
Despite poor living conditions, Roma children have shown that with educational support from “Bread of Life” they can achieve remarkable results.
"Bread of Life" has provided this support by maintaining direct contact with Roma children and their families, as well as developing good relationships with the schools.
The results show that:
- 82% of the children from the preschool program enrolled in primary school;
- 87% of the children speak Serbian fluently;
- Children are more motivated to learn (73% of the children come regularly to tutoring classes and 63% complete their homework);
- Children are confident and regularly attending classes.
The” Bread of Life" has gained the trust of the Roma community and has witnessed the positive changes in the behavior and development of adult Roma in the settlements in where the activities are conducted.
In 2011, the municipality of Surcin was awarded the “Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe” for being the best project for integrating Roma into the local community. In that same year, the municipality was recognized for their contribution to improving the lives of the Roma in Surcin.
During its fourth year of implementation, the project to support education and integration of Roma children received an award from the Erste Foundation in the field of social integration. “Bread of Life” competed with 400 other projects from across the region for this recognition.
For the "Bread of Life", these awards are an incentive to continue our programs directed towards the education and integration of Roma children, and to take on even more responsibility in the future.
